Fertile GroundWorks

Hi All,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving weekend!

Tod & I ended up staying home, due to my back, but had a nice time working in the kitchen-he baked these AMAZING pecan bars and I dried a batch of persimmons! We got to talk with all of our girls and did a movie marathon watching some pretty non holiday movies, lol! This past weekend was also my bestie’s Birthday! Took her out for lunch and shopping yesterday. Found a great dumpling place in Pleasanton-Papa’s Dumplings…DELICIOUS!!! Tod and I are planning to bring his daughter and her boyfriend there when they come to visit for the Christmas holiday!

In the Garden…

Our goal was to get all the beds we had in Summer vegetables prepped and planted before the Thanksgiving holiday and you all helped us to achieve that goal! 73 beds prepped and planted with Winter veggies now! Over 22,000 plants went in the ground over the past month and a half!

Last week was a super short week but the crews showed up and got the last of the prepping & plantings finished! Beds L04 & ARB3 were prepped & planted along with another 19 beds planted-10 planted with their brassica and allium, 8 beds planted with either onions or garlics and another bed planted with Brussel sprouts! 21 beds finished up last week…you all rock! BTW, all the onions are now planted! Over 8,000 seedlings came in, some went to the schools but the majority, over 7,000, you all planted in the garden within the past 3 weeks!!!

The Tzu Chi School was out to help us finish on Wednesday. The students showed up and did their best to finish the beds with their respective plantings of brassicas & alliums or just alliums! They also helped to water in some of the beds which were actually looking a little dry, even after the rains we had! They all put their backs in to it and stayed almost an hour over the allotted time for the shift to help us complete the chores! Go Tzu Chi Go!

We are not completely done with planting for the season. The main focus over the next month is going to be getting the P beds weeded out, prepped and planted with whatever leftover brassicas we have or fava beans! Bed C01 is just needing to be prepped & planted and there are still a few beds that need to be side dressed & planted. We are striving to have that all done before we all head off to Holiday break on the 22nd! We have a lot of other chores that need our focus come the new year so let’s go!!!

Tri-Valley Haven was open last week and we sent in over 245# of produce for the pantry to have for the holiday!

Thank you all for helping out to make our goal come true!

Take care

Lori
