Hi All,
Tod and I have plans to head over to Pescadero Marsh on Sunday. Every time we have gone there in the past we imagined ourselves in a van having lunch along one of the pull outs on the coast line and well now we have a van to do that! We eventually want to use it for staying overnight but we are not quite there yet. We do plan to use it for our camping trip in August but that still gives us time to come up with a plan to install a temporary bed! We will hopefully be getting some yard work done since it has once again gotten away from us! Once I finish the note here I need to also get on a couple of chores that are needing to get done inside the house! Hooray for holiday weekends, lol!!!
In the garden this week;
Well, you all did it, the beds are all prepped and the majority are planted! There are 10 more beds to plant, more to add to and then some companion planting after that but you all prepared us for Summer harvest!!!
Enterprise was out on Tuesday! They helped Kelly and Enrique G. to prep beds AB29 & AB31-moving around 7,700# of compost to get those beds completed! Both beds also had their irrigation lines switched out. The plans for those 2 beds are to plant them in the Three Sisters-this is interplanting corn, climbing beans and squash; where the corn provides a stalk for the beans to climb and the squash acts like a living mulch to hinder weeds and conserve water. The crew also helped to bring compost over to another crew of regular volunteers working on bed AB25! Great job working altogether!!!
That same day another 2 beds were prepped for a grand total of 5 beds getting prepped! While beds were being prepped there were also other chores going on…
In the Orchard DP & AN were busy pruning back fire blight on one of the trees and weeding afterward. In the P beds more trees were planted; Jabotica Brazilian Grape, Curry Leaf, Litchi Chinensis and a Pomegranate. In the Bee Area MB brought in more of her’s and Hubby’s mosquito fish, some of whom were pregnant, and placed them in our little pond that provides water to our bee hives. EL took to hanging more garlic for us in the Office-there is still so much more to go!
There was a Boy Scout who came out to install the rest of his Eagle Scout Project! He is the young man that placed the green bender board on the sides of beds H02 & F01, as well as placed the ADA mats leading into the garden-all of which him and his crew did last Saturday. This week he was back out to bring in a picnic bench he made for a spot to sit at out by the Bee Shed AND a bench that went under the tree over by bed M01! He did a really great job with both pieces, so much so that one of our volunteers was taking a picture of the bench to create one himself!
The next day the P beds had more trees planted; mulberry, and 2 different persimmons. In the Orchard there was an apricot tree needing help with the onslaught of ground squirrels who continue to climb the trees(!) for the fruit. 8 motion detectors were set up to help out with that issue as well as some bags of coyote pee hung from the branches to aid in keeping them somewhat at bay.
The last bed was prepped, P13! Aditit lead the crew that got it done!!! Enrique & Karina were busy adding trellis’ to beds L01 & B13 which enabled us to get both those beds planted with cucumbers! They crew also got beds M12, AB25, AB26 and part of P15 planted!
With the bed prep that was happening there were a lot of onions and garlic that got harvested. Out of the 524.94# of produce harvested last week, ~180# of it was set back for future deliveries and some possible seed fro the garlic that was gleaned out.
You guys rocked it out there! Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for continuing to show up and help out in all the ways that you do!
