Hi All,
Heard you all were BUSY while I was out sick. Tod and I were down all last week with a head cold. Every day I woke up and thought, maybe I could get something done today aaand nope. We watched a lot of movies since we were couch bound. The one movie I can recall is “I Swear” on Netflix. It tore my heart out during the beginning of the movie (I though it was a comedy) with how he was treated when the stutter started and then it went on to show us what he ended up accomplishing in life. Beautifully done, highly recommend. Tod started feeling better towards the end of the week and I started feeling better yesterday but may have over done myself since today I am feeling a bit run down…also didn’t take the NyQuil last night so my sleep was not very good, ugh. I am back with enough energy to get back to work.
Last week in the garden I heard;
Kaiser was out not once but twice! The first crew out helped to glean & weed bed B05, helped to start gleaning & weeding N & P beds as well as cleaned corn for deliveries and washed & packed produce for the same deliveries! The second crew came out to glean one of our larger beds, N11, and then size reduced everything that came out of that bed for us to compost. Thank you Kaiser for always helping out!
Speaking of corn, Peas & Me harvested the rest of the corn in the AB beds, yum! Smaller crew last week, 2 mommas and 4 of their kiddos, and 2 of our volunteers helped them with the harvesting, thank you CL & PL! This week we had another momma and her little reach out to come help! That reminds me, I need to look at getting them on the calendar for November:)
Laura’s crew was out to help plant Red Burger onions in bed K05 and they started work on bed C01! Leif’s crew was out to help continue planting the Red Burger onions in bed K05 and they also took care of the worms. The worms were fed, more shredded paper added and watered! ELM was out later in the week and also continued getting bed K05 planted with Red Burger onions! It is so great that these crews are all coming together to get this bed prepped and planted!
Beyond the K05 bed another 13 beds were planted with 550 seedlings going in, including everything we had started in the garden back in the beginning of September! We’re not done yet, we still have plenty of Valley Transplants to get in the ground as well as seeds! Another 6 beds were prepped this week with over 20,000# of compost being moved into these beds (that is including the B05 bed Kaiser prepped)!!! Great job everyone!
Lance is continuing his weed hunt with the vinegar spray! He also found thistles! Please do help him keep an eye out for those thistles. I see a lot of bindweeding going on so while you are at that be sure to keep an eye out for the other weeds! There was a morning glory discovered in bed N11 and yes it was weeded out. That is also very invasive and can take over a bed quickly. I realize they are beautiful flowers but it just as aggressive as the bindweed…they are in the same family, Convolvulaceae.
CW worked on irrigation in the Orchard as well as the R & N beds! CL worked on a new trellis for the grapes over on the South end of the Worm Bin! Ditch work was finished on the Orchard zone 3 irrometer!
Last week you all harvested 875# of produce! ~40# of that went to volunteer taste tests! It is always nice to share recipes with what you bring home. Please do share what you did with what you got to take home last week!
Thank you all for your help last week! I just know that I am missing calling out some of what got done in the garden but please know your help is ALWAYS appreciated!
Take care
Lori
