Hi All,
NextHome got us started in the garden last week gleaning out over 1000lbs of onions in 3 beds, prepped 2 of those beds and planted another bed! Kaiser was next and got AB09 gleaned & prepped, K05 gleaned & weeded (these are 2 of our longer beds!), got to eradicating bindweed throughout the garden and washed & packed up almost 500lbs of produce to send in to the pantries! Taiho finished the week out by planting AB09, finish the amendment of K05 and washed and packed over 200lbs of produce along with sending in some stored back onions to our local pantries! It is so great seeing the team work it takes to get everything done in the garden! Go Teams Go!!!
EL continued the work on tying up the garlic. We will be needing help with that this week. If anyone is interested please let me know! We need help tying them up as well as hanging them from the rafters. RB Weed Annihilator helped hack the weeds back over by the Church garden as well as got out in the field to hold them back!
Critters-we are still giving momma fox and her kits the medicine for the mange. We know they are eating what is being laid out we have yet to see if it is making a difference. We should start seeing the momma fox itching less right now and within another week some hair growth coming on. I think it was a quiet week in gopher hunting-they are there trust me, they leave their dirt mounds as their calling cards! A few weeks ago we gave our bees a tub for water and last week we had a donation of mosquito fish for it from MB & her honey! There was also some Parrot’s Feather plants with the fish that I placed in the tub for now.
Tuesday you all finished weeding, gleaning & prepping bed M10, weeded out the path between A18 & A17, cleaned up around AUMC trailer, sheet mulched over by the kiwi plants/pump shed, weeded F01 as well as replaced the tomatoes eaten by the gophers and mixed up at least 6 batches of fertilizer-among so many other things done that day I am sure I am missing! Oh, CL buried the Opo branches in bed K07 for root formation-like we do when we trench the tomatoes!
Wednesday got out there and gleaned, weed & prepped bed A01-no more Fava beans! Part of that crew also got bed M10 planted with chard and bok choi! DW also started weeding out the G beds, which will help us in getting them prepped eventually for squash plantings!
Friday saw a Troop of Scouts come out and they were able to help the crew get AB30 gleaned, weed and forked-one of our longer beds! While they got that done the rest of the crew work don getting beds A01, K05, K06 & M13 planted!
Saturday PLAY helped to glean, weed & amend bed AB33, Enrique Garcia concentrated on getting AB30 finished with the amendments, another part of the crew finished prepping bed E01 and the rest of the crew planted beds M17, E01 & M09!
Team work all week long! I love how one chore flowed in to the next day if the need arose!
Another thing we got worked out was getting One Nation Dream Maker their deliveries started back up. They had a few issues that came up over the past couple of months and we found a work around for them-MB is going to start taking the delivery over to their pantry around 10:30, before they crew leaves for the day at 11am! AGAIN, this had to do with team work. One of our volunteers knew the issue, we started communicating it with our other volunteers and a solution came up during that communication.
Let me stress-WE CANNOT DO THIS WITHOUT YOU ALL COMING TOGETHER TO HELP US! Thank you all so much for doing so!
You also harvested over 2000lbs of produce, 536lbs of it went directly to the pantries and almost 1500lbs of it was laid back in the box shed for future deliveries! Wednesday we hit over 10,000lbs of produce that has been harvested for the pantries so far this year! Woohoo!!!
Take care
Lori
