Hi All,
Who felt that earthquake this morning? I was sitting on my couch writing this note when it happened!
Beautiful weekend! Tod and I went hiking yesterday at Reinhart Redwood Regional park yesterday up by Moraga. We were promised ladybug sightings but we did not see any:( It was a beautiful spot nonetheless! We walked along the creek for over a mile before we got to the true hiking…uphill both ways kind of hiking

It felt good getting those lungs to work as well as those legs muscles. We started heading down and one point and Tod was saying it was steeper than what we just went up…I told him he must’ve blacked out what we just hiked because it was pretty much the same steepness! It was great being in the redwoods, we got to see a lot of lichen and so many mushrooms! Lots of people out and it is such a good hike for kiddos! Well, maybe mot the steep part! Who knows though, I would’ve had my daughters try it when they were little!
Last week in the garden was short but mighty!
Pleasanton Transition School was out and helped continue weeding the paths between the A & B beds. They also weeded out the path between beds C01 & D01! They were a small but mighty crew of 3 students and their teacher-who is a very dedicated person if I may say so! She has been coming out with her students for longer than I have been with the garden and every year is different for her but she keeps showing up to give her students the community they need. She also works with her students to clean and match the gloves for us!!!
The Farm Natives group has been looking for help to get the Western Native Hedgerow weeded out…last Tuesday they made the dream come true! The majority of the crew headed back to get the weeds out of the South East side of the bed and they also took out weeds along the fence so DB can get in there with the tractor to grade the land in the field to make for easier mowing! Wednesday’s crew came in and continued weeding out the North East side of the bed! There is still a bit more to weed out but the effort everyone put in definitely shows! Great job team!
Tuesday’s crew also pricked out and potted up 178 eggplant/peppers, that were getting leggy, into 4” pots for the Plant Sale! Yes, it is that time of year! The plants are growing quickly and we need to continue potting up as the plants grow bigger. Friday we also potted up 152 more peppers into 4” pots as well as started more pepper & eggplant seed, 142, for the garden. Brenda grabbed another 5 bags of potting soil which we already started using on Friday! We will be having more seeds to continue starting for both the garden and the Plant Sale.
Wednesday’s crew banded together and got a load of cardboard, that was dumped on Tuesday afternoon, organized and placed inside the Big Hoop House! They got in there, cleaned up what was leftover, organized what we were keeping and started pushing the new cardboard in. WD stayed outside pulling off the staples from most of the boxes as well as got some of the tape off in the process! Go Team Go!
Orchard crew is continuing their pruning of the trees. CL prepped bed JA1S for more grape plants. She shared some Concord style grapes a few months ago and she is now expanding that area over by the Worm Bin. Check it out if you get the chance! The Enriques on Friday sheet mulched the area leading up to the grape plants for her. Brenda started cleaning up the Office on Friday. When VW got there they teamed up and got the motion detectors set up around the Hoop Houses to deter the foxes from climbing up on to the rain barrels to get on top of the Hoop Houses! Apparently it is a higher pitch sound and for the life of us Brenda and I could not hear it! I will admit walking around after shift at certain angles I did hear the sound!
We closed the month out with almost 96# of produce going in to the pantries last week! For the month of January we sent in 585# of produce to our local community! That is really good for the Winter season! The broccoli is starting to come on now so let’s see what February brings!!!
Thank you all for showing up and continuing to help us get produce out to our neighbors!
Take care
Lori
