Hi All,
I went on a Yarn Crawl this past Saturday with the girlfriends! Oh my gosh, we laughed so hard at ourselves! So fun! Tod and I went on a walk at Sycamore Park yesterday-such beautiful weather! We also got some much needed weeding done in the backyard…now I just need to find time to clean the house… Also, while we were heading out for our walk we stopped by another park and when I got out of the car I found an abandoned String of Hearts right outside my car door! Not sure where the heck they were dropped from but I have them in water and will see if they survive.
Last week in the garden;
Kaiser joined us! They helped us continue the work on getting ready for the Plant Sale. Aditi jumped in with a crew to weed out the walkway leading out of the backside of the Big Hoop House-that is where we have people walk out and pay the cashier! Some of the crew joined in and got almost 800 Greek oregano seedlings transplanted into the final pots! Brenda also had part of the crew join her in getting the harvest-all 121# of it-washed and packed up for delivery! Busy, busy, busy!!!
Enjoy Life More joined us in the garden for the first time in a long time on Friday! Brenda and I had a great time touring them around to show how big the garden has gotten since they have been out-2019! Afterwards the crew helped to fill up 6 pack & 4” pots for us to continue using for the Plant Sale! Everyone has had a hand in helping us to get ready for the Plant Sale this year!
Last week a total of 3,996 seeds were started (lettuce, tomatoes and greens, oh my!) and 1,666 plants transplanted into their final pots for the plant sale &/or the garden. The Big Hoop House is all ready for the plants to start being transferred over and we got more eggplants moved over as well as some new trees placed in there for the expansion that is coming along! We received new 4”pots that we are trying to use for the plant sale, as well as more plant labels to help keep everything organized.
Bed K18 was weeded out by GL & JT. Gopher traps set by JR & JP. Some of the Native Nannies weeded out bed JA1 to give room for the Native plants to grow. CL, AP & LB joined the Orchard crew to help continue the weeding. CW fixed a broken post for the Compost Hub. CL & SB helped to continue starting seeds with a mother and son who were able to make it out last week due to his Spring break!
Lance continued his hunt for the thistle and mallow-mostly the thistle-and there was no lack of finding it unfortunately! It is definitely the year of the thistle out in the garden! Weeding also continued behind the Big Hoop House and around the front side of the Orchard. Everyone was careful to leave the Bee Balm and the sages alone!
As mentioned above, the expansion is coming along and work continues on it. The sheet mulching work is still ongoing and there is much cardboard to clean of the staples and plastic tape that comes with it. Removing the staples helps our knees and removing the plastic helps the environment! Irrigation work continued in making sure the lines are all going to get fed rather than all the water going in to one line!
Saturday Graham held his tree grafting class and it was a success! One gal showed up knowing she would not be using the information but was still willing to show up and learn. She plans to give the information to one of her neighbors! If you are ever interested in any of our classes but are not sure if you would ever use the information, who knows, maybe you would be able to help out a neighbor as well!
We also harvested 236.5# of produce from the Winter garden-I realize it is not feeling like Winter right now but that is the garden we have! The cauliflowers and broccolis look like they may have given us their all so over the next few weeks we will need help replacing them with lettuces and greens to tide us over until we are able to start plating the Summer veggie!
Thank you all for coming out to the garden and helping us to help our community!
Take care
Lori
