Hi All,
I am currently at Kaiser waiting for my bestie to get out of knee surgery. A bit tired at the moment but decided to work on the Happy Note for this week and see how far I get with it! Well, I completed it & my bestie is out of surgery and in the recovery room!!! Doc said it all went well:) Aaannnddd then we spent the night at the hospital because her leg continued staying number and the PT’s were heading home! I got her home Tuesday afternoon and so far she is doing great…the nerve block was still working when I saw her yesterday!
State Compensation Insurance Fund and Ross were both back out to help in the garden! In a combined effort they were able to help us get 2 of our veggie beds prepped and planted. They got in there and gleaned out squash out of bed M13 & peppers out of bed M11. Susan helped the SCIF crew with bed M13 and taught them all about roots! Kelly had the other half of the crew helping him out with washing and packing produce for deliveries! Brenda and Scott show Ross how to prep bed M11 and the other half of the crew helped to glean tomato fruit out of about 5 beds and gleaned out a bed of all the tomato plants in it! Both groups brought great energy to the garden and we had a blast working with them!
Jack and Jill of America, ” programs are primarily centered around leadership development, awareness of cultural heritage and community service.”, were out on Saturday and helped us to get 2 beds gleaned out, one of those weeded and another bed gleaned of it’s fruit. One of our regular volunteers helped to show the youth how to weed in the P beds out back, another one of our regulars helped the crew to weed out another bed and another one of our regulars worked diligently under the tutelage of one of the youth who took on a tomato bed to glean out with his mom! It is so wonderful when our community comes together like that and we get to share it with our youth of tomorrow!
Pleasanton Transition was out and helped me to move some old wood pieces out of the doorway of the tool trailer so we can get in and out easily enough. York was out as well and worked on feeding the worms as well as worked on the rotating composter-feeding and watering it in so we can eventually use it in a bed!
PLAY helped out the 2 Enrique’s on Saturday! They all hunkered down, gleaned, weeded, prepped and planted bed L01! In the afternoon the Enrique’s worked on prepping another bed with a young man, whom we are hoping becomes a regular on Saturday afternoons, and once done there joined Scott’s mother & son crew in getting another bed prepped!
And that was basically only half of what got done!!!
Our regular volunteer crews prepped up another 3 beds as well as planted another 2 more. In the Native Beds CL planted 2 Bladder Pods and 3 Gum plants on the North end of the Western Native Bed. All 5 plants were brought in from her yard:) FYI-I have some Milkweed seeds from my plants in our backyard and Tod just brought home 2 more seeds packets from Blossom Hill Nursery…if anyone is in need please let me know! We are willing to share!
The Tool Trailer was cleaned & organized by DB, Brenda got in to the Greenhouse to make room for all our new seedlings the Friday volunteer crew planted up and they also cleaned almost all the dirty labels needed ! The Orchard was weeded, the Berry Patch was tidied up, another BIG batch of fertilizer made and in the Bee Area the yellow jacket traps were freshened up due to the rains-although it looks like we may be getting more. That is ok, it’ll keep the bees safe for the week at least. When I was inspecting them on Friday there was a yellow jacket checking out the South Hive!!!
Phew, I was starting to fill invigorated but now I am tired just writing all that out, lol! ALOT got done last week and it is all thanks to EVERYONE’S combined effort
Over 700# of produce was harvested and sent in to our local food pantries to help out our neighbors!!!
Take care
Lori
