Hi All,
Hope everyone’s week is going well!
York and Kaleidoscope were both back out last week! York started planting bed L04 in Yard Long beans & Black Spanish radishes, checked in on the worms, harvested onion scapes for Tuesday delivery and got to watch the wood chips get delivered out front! Kaleidoscope planted more Yard Long bean seeds for L04, created & cleaned labels and started laying the cardboard & wood chip for the Western side of the Bee Area!
Starbucks came out and got straight to work on one of our largest beds-N08. It was full of onions, that they gleaned for harvest, and weeds, which they methodically pulled out. It kept them pretty darn busy most of the shift! They were able to get it forked before we need their help finishing up bed N11. We were needing to get the compost on before the shift ended and Starbucks helped us to get it done!!!
Louis Dreyfus Co. came in the next day and helped us glean out another large bed-N15! Yup, no more broccoli bed. There was a lot of gleaning and weeding going on there and some of the crew stayed on bed K07, gleaning out onions and weeding it as well. By the end of shift they had forked both beds and helped us to fertilize & compost bed N08!
All while the groups were out working hard helping us get the chores done our regulars were there as well, either working side by side with the work groups or working in other areas of the garden. RB was back with his Weed Annihilator taking out weeds over by the large rain barrels! GL & KB started weeding out beds AB 26 & AB27 of the poppies that were taking over and they uncovered more cauliflowers for us to harvest! They also joined in helping us to compost bed N11! Friday’s crew helped us to continue weeding out bed N15, beds B15, A18 & started on A17!
Bed prepping continued. AB34, thank you Tuesday crew, H02, thank you CL, N15, A18, B15, thank you Saturday crew!!! N08 was a combined effort of Starbucks, Louis Dreyfus Co. and our regular crew! Thanks to all that effort Ab34 was planted with 56 Chocolate Cake peppers, N11 was planted with 45 mixed squash plants, N08 was planted with 57 mixed squash plants and B15 had 25 mixed squash plants! Inducing L04 planted by York, we were able to get 5 more beds planted last week! 16 out of 94 beds are planted with summer veggies! That is not including the perennial veggies bed, the berry patch and the native hedgerow.
SM planted the Oak tree that was donated last week on the West side of the Bee Area. KG & DC staked it up a couple of days later thanks to this windy weather! AW & RE also installed a galvanized tub in the Bee Area for us to be able to provide water for the bees and possibly the wild life! It will need a little set up-drip lines running to it so the water does not get stagnant and Brenda & I discussed getting some water plants to help it as well as some fishes:)
Before we got to working on those chores that got done we harvested almost 490lbs of produce to send in to our pantries!!! We did have a little help from the onions since they weigh a lot more than what we currently have available but still, good job on you all for getting that done and sent out to our neighbors!
Here is a big thank you-THANK YOU-for everything you get done when you come out and help in the garden:)
Take care
Lori
