It may be chilly outside, but soon enough it will be time to have seedlings ready for planting in our gardens. Let Fertile GroundWorks start some plants for you and your garden. Our plant sale helps support our Garden of Grace and Sustainable School Garden Program. This year we’re offering individual veggie seedlings in 3.5 inch pots, six-packs of lettuce and salad green seedlings, four-packs of beans and greens, and six-packs of herbs (in a single variety or build your own). We’ve refined our selection slightly based on what grew well in our gardens last year. All plants in pots are $4.00 each, four-packs are $4.00 each, and six-packs are also $4.00 each. Don’t see what you’re looking for? Add a note to your order and we’ll get back to you. Complete the checkout process online and pay for your seedlings (by check or cash) when you come pick them up on Saturday April 6th between 9 am and noon at our Garden of Grace. The garden is located behind the Asbury United Methodist Church at 4743 East Avenue, Livermore. Orders are due by Monday, February 11, 2019. Quantities are limited so place your order early!
Here’s an opportunity to serve our mission without getting down and dirty in the garden. Fertile Groundworks is seeking a volunteer to serve as our treasurer. This position requires about 2-3 hours per week on average and needs someone with some Quickbooks experience or other accounting software experience. The treasurer pays all our bills, issues payroll checks through QB payroll service, makes bank deposits and uses QB to reconcile our checking account. FGW supplies the laptop computer and all supplies, we just need your time and dedication. This is a great way to help us feed those in need without the physical labor of working in the garden. If you are interested in learning more or would like to volunteer please email our Board President at: [email protected]
Dear Fertile GroundWorks supporters,
Our heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended our Taste for Giving fundraiser this past Sunday evening. It was a wonderful success, and we hope that everyone had as much fun at the event as we did. You can see photos from the event below. Fertile GroundWorks is only able to grow because of your generous support!
We send our sincere gratitude to all of the people who contributed months of their time organizing the event. We are also thankful for the individuals, National Charity League, and Boy’s Team Charity members who volunteered on the day of the event.
In other news… have you heard that Fertile GroundWorks recently started selling produce in a You Pick format on Friday afternoons from 3-6pm and Saturday mornings from 9am to noon? Right now, the garden has lots growing, with tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, zucchini and other summer squashes, cucumbers, kale, and beans all ready for harvest. We’ve been asking for $2/pound for produce harvested.
Not sure how to pick a pepper? No worries, the first few times you come to the You Pick, you’ll have a personal shopper who’ll show you around the garden, point out the veggies that are ready to harvest, and help you harvest what you want (they’ll also fill out the forms for our garden records).
We selected the dates of the You Pick to help the garden operate at optimal production levels so that we can continue our vegetable donations to Open Heart Kitchen and local food pantries during the week. Having a second set of weekly harvests means the plants keep producing, and we have less over-ripe veggies from week to week. So far this year, the You Pick is working out wonderfully. We hope you will come out and try it out for yourself!
Until next we meet, please take care of yourselves and may your gardens grow well.
Join us for our 6th Annual Taste for Giving fundraiser at 5:30 PM on Sunday August 26, 2018 at Retzlaff Winery in Livermore. Help support Fertile GroundWorks’ continued efforts to provide healthy produce to our neighbors in need while partaking of superb Retzlaff wines and a delectable buffet dinner catered by On the Vine Caterers, as well as music, fun activities, drawings, and silent and live auctions. All this while grooving to music mastered by DJ, Steve Goodman. Buy your tickets before August 18th for only $60.00 each. Save 10% more by sponsoring a table for ten friends for only $540.00. Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing you there!
Fertile GroundWorks wants to send a giant THANK YOU to everyone who supported our recent plant sale.
You helped us raise almost $9,000 to support our mission to teach, grow and give. Your support allowed us to give 1,230 plants plus compost and fertilizer to local school gardens. In addition, these funds will allow us to continue our work to grow 20,000 pounds of healthy fruit and vegetables each year to improve the food security of our neighbors in need.
We were happy to see and hear from so many new and returning customers and volunteers throughout the sale. Among the praises we received about the quality of the seedlings and the kindness of our helpful volunteers, one customer’s comment was especially meaningful to us. She said that our mission to provide organic and nutritious vegetables to those in need is how change starts in the world. “What a stupendous and wonderful endeavor. It is fantastic to see all the volunteers and community working help support others in need!”
Thank you! We couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you. We hope you all can come back out to the garden this summer to see how things are growing and take part in our new U-pick produce service. Stay tuned for more information about that and other news from the garden!
With sincerest gratitude,
Brenda and the Fertile GroundWorks crew
